Abstract
The study investigated the effect of internal communication strategies on organizational performance, focusing on Chemonics International in Abuja, Nigeria. A mixed-methods design was reported, which combined a census survey of 154 employees, out of which 128 valid responses were obtained, with semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Descriptive statistics, regression tests, and thematic analysis were employed in analyzing the data. The findings indicated that communication frequency, message clarity, feedback mechanisms, and communication channels each had a significant and positive influence on performance outcomes. It was reported that message clarity emerged as the strongest predictor, as it enhanced decision-making and reduced misunderstandings. Frequent and timely communication was said to improve coordination and project delivery, while feedback mechanisms were observed to foster inclusiveness and employee engagement, though delays in managerial responses were identified as a weakness. It was further reported that the strategic use of multiple communication channels, particularly the balance between digital platforms and face-to-face interactions, improved accessibility and strengthened trust within the organization. The results were found to reinforce Social Exchange Theory, Media Richness Theory, and Organizational Communication Theory, while also highlighting the role of dynamic communication capabilities in complex development environments. The study concluded that internal communication should be regarded not merely as administrative but as a strategic enabler of organizational effectiveness. It was therefore recommended that organizations institutionalize clear communication protocols, strengthen responsiveness to feedback, and invest in communication competence to optimize performance.
